Besides Japan, are there walking holidays in East Asia?
Japan has done an excellent job marketing their walking routes to a western audience, but there are walking holidays and trekking opportunities throughout East and Southeast Asia — they’re just a little harder to find. It can be challenging to navigate websites and find local tour operators in this region (unless you speak the language), but it’s not impossible. Understanding how each country structures their tourism and certifies guides is key. We’ve barely scratched the surface and have much to learn about walking routes in Asia. We welcome anyone with expert knowledge of this region to give us advice. Here are the popular walking destinations for East and Southeast Asia that we know about so far.
Japan
Japan offers well-developed trails along ancient paths that are fully supported by local inns, making it one of the best countries in Asia to experience inn to inn hiking. For pilgrims, there is the Kumano Kodo and Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. The Nakasendo Way offers a glimpse into traditional Japan with its picturesque post towns. Climbing Mount Fuji during the summer months rewards trekkers with breathtaking sunrise views. Yakushima Island boasts ancient cedar forests, and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route showcases stunning alpine scenery. Kamikochi in the Northern Japan Alps offers beautiful valley walks. And our personal favorite — Hokkaido, with its picturesque treks through national parks, far from industrial Japan.
South Korea
Hiking in South Korea is a beloved national pastime, and the country’s diverse landscapes offer plenty of exciting trails for walking enthusiasts. From the iconic peaks of Seoraksan National Park to the serene temples nestled in the mountains, there’s something for every hiker. South Korea’s well-maintained network of trails ensures accessibility and safety, making it suitable for beginners and experienced trekkers. Along the paths, hikers can revel in the beauty of cherry blossoms in spring, vibrant foliage in autumn, and breathtaking vistas all year round. The cultural encounters with local hikers and the opportunity to visit ancient temples along the way add a unique charm to hiking adventures in South Korea.
Taiwan
Taiwan is known for its breathtaking tropical scenery and has several trekking options such as the famous Zhuilu Old Trail in Taroko National Park and the Xueshan (Snow Mountain) trek. We’ve written a Guide to Historic Trails of Taiwan to give you ideas.
China
China offers a range of walking and trekking opportunities, such as the Great Wall Trek, Tiger Leaping Gorge Trek, and the scenic routes in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
Mongolia
Mongolia’s rugged landscapes, from the rolling grasslands of the steppe to the towering mountains of the Altai and Khangai ranges, offer diverse terrains for hikers to explore. Trekkers can encounter wild horses, yaks, and other unique wildlife while traversing the vast steppes and crossing rivers and valleys. Mongolia’s nomadic hospitality welcomes hikers, offering them a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the Mongolian people. Whether trekking in the Gobi Desert, exploring the stunning landscapes of Terelj National Park, or embarking on a multi-day adventure through the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, hiking in Mongolia promises an unforgettable and soul-stirring journey into the heart of an ancient and majestic land.
Cambodia
While Cambodia is primarily known for its ancient temples, the country also offers unique opportunities for hiking enthusiasts. The Cardamom and Elephant Mountains in the southwest provide a backdrop of lush rainforests and remote wilderness, making them ideal for adventurous treks. Hiking through these areas reveals a diverse array of plants and wildlife like gibbons and elephants. The Kulen Mountains, located near Siem Reap, offer a chance to explore jungle trails leading to hidden waterfalls and ancient temple ruins. These off-the-beaten-path hiking experiences allow travelers to connect with nature and encounter Cambodia’s lesser-known landscapes, complementing the cultural marvels for which the country is famous.
Vietnam
Vietnam’s landscapes range from towering limestone karsts in Halong Bay to terraced rice fields in Sapa and dense jungles in the north. Hikers can explore lush national parks like Cat Ba, Phong Nha-Ke Bang, and Ba Be, where wildlife and hidden caves await discovery. Trekking through ethnic minority villages in the remote mountainous regions allows travelers to experience the rich traditions and warm hospitality of the local communities. Whether navigating the trails of the northern highlands or venturing into the central highlands and southern regions, Vietnam’s hiking trails promise unforgettable adventures in a land of vibrant colors and captivating scenery.
Before embarking on any walking holidays or treks in these regions, it’s essential to research the trails, prepare adequately, and consider your fitness level and the challenges of each route. Additionally, be mindful of the local rules and customs to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Just one more reason to choose a good walking tour company instead of planning your own trip.
