The Natural Adventure

Guided, Self-guided

The Natural Adventure is a large UK based company with offices in Bulgaria and London. They specialize in self-guided walking holidays with a few guided options, cycling and self-drive hikes. They also offer advanced hiking routes including the Himalayas, Kilimanjaro and lesser known hikes in Bhutan, Iceland and India. Where they stand out amongst the crowd is in their coverage of the Balkans region of Europe (they’re one of the few offering self–guided trips in North Macedonia). They also offer a wide variety of pilgrimage routes (including Via Francigena and other lesser known routes).

Review of The Natural Adventure Website

The Natural Adventure is one of our favorite sites, partly because they’ve gone above and beyond in terms of what they provide. They have excellent search filters and great categories. We suggest going straight to their Hidden Gems or Bucket List collections. You can search flights or public transit within the website. They provide all the important details for most of their trips, including lodging names and photos, but it can vary because it depends on the local tour operator that they’ve contracted for the trip.

For all of these reasons the Natural Adventure earns our Search Star.

Things to like about The Natural Adventure

  • Best selection of self-guided walking holidays in terms of variety and less-touristy locations
  • You can select what comfort level you want for lodging
  • Some trips include airport transfers (additional cost)

Online reviews are mixed for this company. Some love it and had amazing experiences but others complain of not receiving trip packets on time and sub-standard lodging. We always recommend doing your research and asking questions before you book a trip.

Note about Large Tour Companies

While we love and support large walking holiday companies because they make searching a breeze, we will always encourage you to try and book directly with local tour operators. They are the ones operating your trip at the ground level and booking directly with them keeps more money at the local level and gives you a more customized experience. Use our search tool on the home page and filter by Special Category–Local Choice or Company Type–Local Operator to find these hidden gems.
