Best walking routes of Northern Europe
Northern Europe is a dreamscape of stunning walking routes that traverse through diverse landscapes, from rugged coastlines to lush forests and majestic mountains. Most walking holiday or hiking enthusiasts are aware of several of these, but we think some will take you by surprise.
Denmark
If you’re seeking flat coastal walks then Denmark is a fantastic choice. Their famous Hærvejen is considered a camino, following ancient paths with a well-organized support system for walkers. The Gendarme Path is a picturesque coastal walk that stretches along the Danish-German border. It meanders through charming villages, sandy beaches, and verdant countryside, offering stunning views of the Flensburg Fjord and the Baltic Sea. Take a peek at Wild Rover Travel and you’ll find even more delightful walking routes!
Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania
Latvia and Estonia offer unique opportunities for bog walking, including Estonia’s Viru Raba boardwalk and Latvia’s Great Kemeri Bog Boardwalk, taking hikers through a bog landscape teeming with wildlife and rare plant species. Estonia’s Lahemaa National Park offers a network of well-marked trails amidst pristine forests, coastal cliffs, and tranquil lakes. Neighboring Lithuania boasts a long-distance coastal trail in Curonian Spit National Park that meanders through sand dunes, pine forests, and serene beaches. Responsible Travel offers a guided walking tour combining these countries (last time we checked).
Finland
The Karhunkierros in Oulanka National Park is a popular trek that passes waterfalls, rapids, and suspension bridges, providing an unforgettable hiking experience. Finland also has one of the most unique pilgrimage routes, the St. Olav Waterway, which Nordic Pilgrim would be happy to help plan for you.
Sweden
The Kungsleden is Sweden’s renowned long-distance trek that stretches through the Swedish Lapland, passing through breathtaking Arctic landscapes and Sweden’s highest peak, Kebnekaise.
Faroe Islands
The Faroe Islands are a hiker’s dream, with numerous trails exploring dramatic cliffs, green valleys, and picturesque villages. There are so many epic hikes here. We spent two weeks on a driving and hiking tour, hopping from island to island, and we didn’t even come close to hiking all of the trails. You can read more about it at Faroe Islands Hiking Tours and Guide.
Iceland
The Laugavegur Trek is one of Iceland’s most famous hiking routes, showcasing the country’s diverse terrain. Laugavegur is one of those epic hikes that every backpacker should have on their bucket list. It takes hikers through colorful mountains, geothermal hot springs, and awe-inspiring glaciers, offering a glimpse into Iceland’s otherworldly landscapes. Not a backpacker? No worries, there are plenty of tours that combine driving and hiking with a warm bed and food each night.
Norway
Norway’s most famous walking route is the Trolltunga hike, offering breathtaking views of the iconic Trolltunga rock formation jutting out over a fjord, but we personally like the Reinebringen trail near Lofoten Islands. The Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) hike, overlooking Lysefjord, is another popular and dramatic trail in Norway. There’s even a camino, the St. Olav’s Way begins in Sweden and ends in Trondheim. Honestly, everywhere in Norway is jaw-droppingly gorgeous so the hardest part of planning a trip here is deciding which paths you want to focus on.
Each of these walking routes in Northern Europe offers a unique and unforgettable experience, showcasing the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a nature enthusiast, these trails provide a chance to immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring landscapes of this stunning part of the world.
