Freewheeling Adventures

Guided, Self-guided

Freewheeling Adventures is a family-owned tour operator based in Nova Scotia, Canada. Founded by Cathy and Philip Guest, this fun-loving team offers self-guided and guided walking and biking holidays throughout Canada and Europe. Some trips can be self-drive as well. Though their primary focus is cycling and guided trips, they offer an excellent selection of self-guided hiking routes so this is the kind of company you can stick with for multiple trips.

Review of Freewheeling Adventures Website

Freewheeling Adventures’ website is excellent. It’s simple in design, easy to navigate and provides all of the necessary details, including daily elevation changes, lodging details and very good FAQs. They actually provide links to places in their itineraries, like lodging, places to visit and public transit. We’ve never seen another company do this and we applaud them for doing so! Each trip includes a section with introductory information about the destination, another detail we appreciate but don’t often see from other companies.

Search filters allow you to narrow by:

  • activity (bike, hike, multi-activity, sea-kayak)
  • difficulty level
  • location
  • categories (cultural walks, family friendly, low traffic bike routes, wilderness hikes)

We couldn’t get their blog page to load and they aren’t consistently active on social media. We’d love to see photos and stories of recent trips to give us a more personal connection, but they must be doing something right because they are busy planning trips as you can see on their Growing Groups page. It’s a good sign when a company has such a loyal fan base without having to do much marketing.

Freewheeling Adventures is pricier than most of their competitors but their loyal following suggests they’re worth it. If budget is of utmost concern, consider Bootprints Hiking Tours for Nova Scotia and Newfoundland or Randonnee Tours for western Canada. If you prefer more rugged accommodations and trekking, consider Great Canadian Trails.
