Trekalayan DestinAsians is a new company based in Nepal offering classic trekking expeditions plus alternative treks and gentle walking holidays in the Himalaya. Trekalayan caught our attention with their humorous Instagram posts but what really impresses us is their focus on promoting alternative routes and respecting the people and land in which they live and operate. The founder spent six years providing services in Nepal for clients of large tour companies before deciding to go independent.
Review of Trekalayan Website
Trekalayan’s site is beautifully designed, easy to navigate and full of information, including all the important trip details plus crucial info about altitude sickness, travel visas and more. Unless you’ve already researched hiking in Nepal, it’s best to start with their Plan Your Holiday page to gain a good understanding of what to expect. They describe types of lodging and amenities, when to visit, suggested routes and what’s included in the pricing. You can search by route (destination) or adventure level (classic, comfort, gentle or little known adventures). They also offer customized itineraries.
We love everything about Trekalayan’s site, except the lack of photos (especially of lodging), which is why we recommend following them on Instagram so you get a visual representation of what they describe so well on their site.
Things to like about Trekalayan
- Locally owned and operated and certified by the appropriate authorities
- They offer alternative routes that are more carbon-friendly and better support rural communities
- They provide gentle walks, giving access to those who cannot physically handle the classic routes
- All-inclusive pricing, including domestic transportation, licensed guides and porters, permits, breakfast and some dinner
- Option to rent sleeping bags
- Their social media posts are funny and informative
Preserving the ecology of the Himalaya and supporting the local people stands at our core belief. In recent years, we’ve seen the trends of modern Himalayan travellers have more of a ‘just get there’ attitude, and introducing them to the immersive trekking experience and incorporating the ‘old soul’ of mountain adventures are what we look for in our trips.
