The Juliana Trail is a fairly new long distance trail in Slovenia that totals 205 miles (if you include additional stages). Most of the walk is circular, which is rare for long distance trails, with the circle traversing around the Julian Alps for 168 miles in 16 stages. Add in castles and an additional four stages, which include the vivid green Soča River valley and the vineyard region of Goriška Brda, and you have yourself an epic hike. Best of all, this trail has been designed with walking holidays in mind as daily walks range from 10 to 15 miles per day and end with various lodge options. Slovenia has made it easy to book your own lodgings or let the local agency plan everything for you, so this is a DIY dream trip.
Review of Juliana Trail Websites
There are two excellent websites to use for planning your own inn to inn hiking trip on the Juliana Trail. Start with the Soča Valley site, which provides a simple introduction to the trail itself, links to local villages and an excellent FAQ section. From here you can read about each stage, including:
- technical details about the trail
- step-by-step directions
- trail conditions and alerts
- public transportation
- photos
Use the Julian Alps site for lodging and further details. This site is the primary source for Juliana Trail information. Click on Accommodation to see the variety of options available and then decide whether or not you want to book directly yourself or let someone book accommodations for you. If you want daily luggage transport services use the Julian Alps Booking Center, which provides the following services:
- Tailor-made offers
- Accommodation booking
- Transfer of luggage on every stage
- Return transfer to the starting point
- 1O-hour hotline service
- Optional rest day(s)
- Extra activities along the trail (climbing, kayaking and more)
Things to like about Juliana Trail
- One of the best ways to experience the natural side of Slovenia, away from the tourist cities
- Experience a beautiful alpine trail without the difficult peak climbing found on similar alpine hikes
- Covers diverse terrain with turquoise colored rivers, lush alpine forests and mountain views throughout the trip
- Offers excellent accommodations for every stage, making this a popular route for walking holidays
- Campsites and hostels are included so this can easily be a backpacking trek
- Has a well-designed Juliana Trail app, which you can download from Google Play or Apple’s App Store
For all of these reasons and because they are the direct source for this trail, Juliana Trail via the Juliana Alps Booking Center is our #1 Local Choice for this region of Slovenia. If you want to choose a pre-packaged trip then look at larger companies such as Inntravel or The Natural Adventure.
