ATG Oxford is a well-established walking holiday company. Based in the UK, they focus on walking holidays and are experts at inn-to-inn walking trips. Their slogan is “the best way to see a country is on foot” and we couldn’t agree more! ATG Oxford offers self-guided and guided trips and unlike some of the larger competitors, they focus on a select few European countries and some guided options in Oman, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, India and Chile.
ATG Oxford Website Review
ATG Oxford’s site looks old school but it’s easy to navigate and they have excellent search filters. They are one of the best walking holiday sites for people who want trips focused on cultural or culinary activities. Their Interest categories include wine, architecture, art, gardens, gastronomy, geography, birding, wildlife, history, and pilgrim routes. They also provide a Fitness Test which is useful for beginners who have no idea what they can and can’t walk.
Things to like about ATG Oxford
- Local route manager on call for issues or if daily routes need to be adjusted
- Their guide books provide details typically not seen in other companies, details such as open business hours and recommended restaurants and shops, places of interest and their opening times
- Walking routes have all been measured with a surveyor’s wheel – important to note because some companies rely on national trail info and never actually walk the trails themselves. One misplaced mile or misinterpreted terrain note makes a huge difference to your tired feet.
- Some dinners are included and lodging details are provided on their site
- Itineraries on their site aren’t detailed but they give all the important info: exact lodging, miles/hours/ascents, pricing and currency converter
- Their charitable trust actively supports restoration projects in the regions that they operate and they do so in partnership with local agencies
Note about online reviews: There are few reviews online for ATG Oxford, which is unusual for a company in business so long. The few reviews that do exist aren’t always favorable, yet they are known for high standards in terms of service quality. Perhaps their reputation has ensured a loyal following, but their online presence could use some attention if they wish to attract new generations.
