Similar to Alpine Hikers, Alpenwild is a US owned company offering self-guided and guided walking holidays, focused entirely on the Swiss Alps. Due to the geography of this area, their trips are for experienced hikers who can handle strenuous hiking and high elevations. Not all of their routes include luggage transfer, so this company will appeal more to backpackers. While they make an effort to select the best lodging, some trips include mountain huts which are basically hostels. That’s just par for the course when hiking certain routes in the Alps. For those seeking an easier experience, they do offer Trips by Rail and Culinary Tours.
Review of Alpenwild Website
Alpenwild’s site is skimpy on details, especially regarding lodging and daily walking conditions (mileage, elevation, etc). On a positive note, they DO provide this type of info if you request it. They offer a few center-based trips but they don’t label them as such so there is no way to search for this type of trip. Their site provides a wealth of knowledge about the Haute Route and Tour du Mont Blanc. We also love their article “Is a Self-Guided Trip for Me” and the fact that they seek to inform just as much as they seek to sell a product. This librarian salutes you, Alpenwild!
